Kirkjufellsfoss parking in 2026

The car park below Kirkjufell has charged around the clock for a while now, and since August 2026 the national park at the other end of the peninsula charges too. Here are the rates, the payment options and how not to get a ISK 4,500 bill a week after you fly home.

If you come on a tour, you can skip most of this post: the operator pays its own parking and it is already in your ticket. If you rent a car, Kirkjufellsfoss is one of two places on the Snaefellsnes loop where you will pay to stop, and the payment works differently from home. There is no barrier and often nobody to ask.

The quick answer

Kirkjufellsfoss parking costs ISK 1,400 for a small car, 1,800 for a medium car and 6,400 for a large vehicle, charged 24 hours a day, every day (sannir.is/kf). Pay with the EasyPark app, its CameraPark plate recognition or the QR payment machine. Unpaid by the end of the day, you get a ISK 4,500 fee plus ISK 250 for the e-invoice. Snaefellsjokull National Park adds one ISK 1,100 car fee, valid park-wide until midnight.

How much does parking at Kirkjufellsfoss cost in 2026?

ISK 1,400 for a small car, ISK 1,800 for a medium car and ISK 6,400 for a large vehicle. The charge applies 24 hours a day, all year.

The landowners' parking page at sannir.is/kf lists three rates and says the fee applies around the clock, every day of the year. There is no night rate: a 3 am aurora stop costs the same as a noon visit. One payment covers your stay that day.

The rates have gone up over the years, so older blog posts quoting ISK 700 or 1,000 are out of date. Check the sign on the day: the rates are posted at the entrance with the QR code.

How do you pay for Kirkjufellsfoss parking?

With the EasyPark app (scan the QR code on the signs), with EasyPark's CameraPark setting that reads your plate automatically, or at the digital payment machine.

The signs in the car park carry a QR code that opens EasyPark. If you already use the app at home, switch on CameraPark and the camera reads your plate and charges you without you doing anything. The payment machine is there for people without the app, and it also works through a QR code, so you need a phone with data either way.

A tip for rental cars: take a photo of your plate before you leave the rental desk. You will type it into the app at every paid stop on this trip, and a dark car park in December is a bad place to read a dirty plate.

What happens if you do not pay for parking at Kirkjufellsfoss?

If you have not paid by the end of the same day, a ISK 4,500 non-payment fee is added, plus ISK 250 for the electronic invoice and any third-party charges.

Payment is tied to your licence plate. Pay the same day and nothing else happens. Miss it, and the claim goes to the vehicle's registered owner, which for a rental car is the rental company. Most companies pass it on to your card with an admin fee of their own, often weeks later.

The cheapest fix is to pay before you drive off. If you forgot, pay in the app that evening: the rule is the same day, not the same hour.

Let someone else do the driving and the parking: small group, max 19, Kirkjufell as the last stop.

Do tour passengers pay for parking at Kirkjufellsfoss?

No. Tour operators pay for their own vehicles, and the cost is part of your ticket. You just get off the bus.

All the day tours on this site stop at Kirkjufell, usually for 20 to 40 minutes. Your Day Tours' small-group trip keeps it for the end of the day with 25 minutes there; BusTravel's premium tour goes there first. Either way, the parking is the operator's problem.

Self-driving still makes sense in summer: the loop is paved, the roads are easy and two car parks a day add up to about ISK 2,500. Our comparison of a private tour against self-drive runs the full numbers, fuel included.

Is there other paid parking on Snaefellsnes in 2026?

Yes: Snaefellsjokull National Park has charged a service fee through its car parks since August 2026. ISK 1,100 for a car covers every park car park until midnight.

The national park announced the fee in August 2026. It funds rangers, toilets and waste handling. Rates are ISK 450 for a motorcycle, 1,100 for a car with up to 5 people, 1,400 for a vehicle with 6 to 9, and ISK 2,700, 5,200 or 9,400 for buses by size. You pay in the Parka app, by scanning the QR code on the signs, or at the kiosk in the Malarrif visitor centre.

The useful part: the fee is valid throughout the park until midnight. Djupalonssandur, Londrangar, Saxholl and Malarrif are all inside it, so pay once at your first park stop and keep the receipt in the app. Arnarstapi, Budir and Ytri Tunga sit outside the park on the south coast. A full self-drive loop with both paid stops costs about ISK 2,500 for a small car.

Londrangar sits inside the national park, so one park fee covers it and Djupalonssandur.

Can you climb Kirkjufell, and where are the nearest toilets?

Do not plan to climb it: the mountain is steep and exposed, it has seen fatal falls, and west.is says climbing is prohibited in winter. The nearest public toilets are in Grundarfjordur, a few minutes away.

After three deaths in four years the landowners closed Kirkjufell to all hiking from November 2022 to mid June 2023, and West Iceland's tourist board still says climbing is strictly prohibited in winter and a local guide is the better choice in summer. No tour on this site goes up.

For toilets, drive into Grundarfjordur: the harbour facilities have 12 toilets in opening hours. On a tour the guide plans the breaks, and on the long stretch back to Reykjavik most tours stop in Borgarnes.
