Booking choice: The Snaefellsnes and Kirkjufell small group, from $151 per person. Check dates Tour details
BusTravel Iceland's classic tour runs a coach of up to 65 seats for $143. The small groups cost $151 to $164 for a minibus capped at 17 to 19, and $226 to $234 if lunch is in. Both drive the same loop in about the same time.
What follows is drawn from the listings and from what guests on both report. Short version: the gap is small enough that most people should pay it.
The quick answer
Pay the extra $8 to $21 for a small group unless every dollar counts. You usually get hotel pickup instead of a bus stop transfer, longer stops at Ytri Tunga and Arnarstapi, and a guide who can change the order on the day. The coach is fine value at $143, comes with a separate guide on many days, and suits budget travellers and anyone who sleeps well on buses.

What is the difference between a small-group and a coach Snaefellsnes tour?
Group size, pickup and flexibility. The coach takes up to 65 people from a central bus stop; small groups take 17 to 19 and usually collect you from your hotel.
Side by side:

Check dates for the Snaefellsnes and Kirkjufell small groupHow much more does a small-group Snaefellsnes tour cost?
Between $8 and $21 per person for the minibus, or about $85 more for the lunch tours. On an 11-hour day that is about a dollar an hour.
The coach is $143. Your Day Tours is $151, Nicetravel $154, the small-group adventure $155, Arctic Adventures $160 and the premium tour $164. If you would pay for hotel pickup on the coach anyway, most of the gap closes, since several small groups include it.
The lunch tours sit in a different bracket: EastWest at $226 and Gateway to Iceland at $234. A cafe lunch at Arnarstapi plus snacks costs a fair share of that difference, so compare them as minibus plus meal.
What is the coach tour like?
Well run, good value and long. Guests praise the guides and the pace; the downsides are the pickup transfer, the crowd at each stop and short stops at the seals and Budir.
On many coach days a guide talks while a separate driver drives, which small groups rarely offer. A coach guest wrote: "The guide was friendly, knowledgeable and gave us ample time at each location." Another: "Very thorough tour, Omar was great. He explained everything very well and we had more than enough time at every stop."
The complaints follow a pattern. Guests report that couples who board last can't always sit together, that a few late passengers can hold up the whole bus, and that 15 minutes at Ytri Tunga barely covers the walk down. A tip from a coach reviewer: the best views on the way out are on the right-hand side.

Are small-group minibuses comfortable for 12 hours?
Mostly yes, with one catch: when a 19-seat minibus is full, the back row is cramped and bumpy. Ask for a seat near the front at pickup.
Guests on full minibuses report narrow seats, little space for bags and a rough ride at the back. A driver-guide's microphone doesn't always reach the last rows. If you get carsick, say so when you board.
A small-group guest from March offered the best trick: "ask the driver to sit in the chair next to the driver. Most of the time nobody sits there, but you get the best views underway". On a quiet day a small group can be very small; a premium-tour guest counted "about 9 people".

Do small groups get more time at the stops?
At the big stops, usually yes. Nicetravel gives the seals 40 minutes against the coach's 15, and Your Day Tours gives Arnarstapi 50 against 30.
The coach spreads its time over more stops, including an hour in the national park and 15 minutes at Berserkjahraun. Small groups drop one or two and spend longer at the rest. Fewer people also means faster toilet stops and quicker boarding, and those minutes add up over eight stops.
Small groups also bend. Guests report extra waterfalls, a cafe with carrot cake, and guides who reorder the loop to dodge the crowds or catch the seals at low tide. One Nicetravel guest: "He also stopped at the Visitor Center for me." The full minute table is in the stops guide.

Forty minutes with the seals, 45 at Arnarstapi and 30 at Londrangar, with pickup from your hotel.

Budget travellers, solo travellers happy in a crowd, and anyone who wants a separate guide talking while someone else drives.
At $143 it is the cheapest way round the peninsula with a guide, and the itinerary is the most complete: eight stops including Berserkjahraun and an hour in the park. If you are staying near Hofdatorg, the meeting point is a walk away. Children from 2 can join.
Skip it if you hate waiting for stragglers, or if seals are your reason to go.
Eight stops and a full day with a guide for $143: the best price on the peninsula.

Explore the Snaefellsnes and Kirkjufell small group Tour detailsIs a small group better in winter?
Slightly. Both run in all weather, but a small group boards faster and can reorder the loop around wind and daylight, which matters with four hours of sun.
In December the whole tour fits between about 11:20 sunrise and 15:30 sunset in Reykjavik. Every minute lost to boarding 60 people comes out of the stops. Wind is the other factor: a September coach day logged gusts of 26 m/s at a lookout and cut several stops. Smaller vehicles get the same weather, so dress for it either way.
