How long at each stop

The tours share a loop and split the day very differently. Here is how long each operator really gives you at the beach, the arch, the seals and the mountain, and how to spend the time.

Every day tour lists its stops with minutes, and the numbers differ more than the prices. Ytri Tunga gets 15 minutes on the coach and 40 with Nicetravel. Arnarstapi ranges from 30 to 50. One tour gives Kirkjufell 10 minutes, another 40.

The table comes straight from the operators' itineraries on Viator, checked in October 2026. Wind and late passengers shave minutes off on the day; a quiet group sometimes earns a bonus stop.

The quick answer

Most tours give 30 to 45 minutes at Djupalonssandur and Arnarstapi, 25 to 30 at Kirkjufell, 15 to 40 at the Ytri Tunga seals and 10 to 20 at Budir church. The Nicetravel small group has the longest seal stop (40 min) and keeps Londrangar (30). Your Day Tours gives Arnarstapi 50. Thirty minutes is enough for the lifting stones and the shipwreck at Djupalonssandur, or the Gatklettur arch at Arnarstapi, not for the coastal walk to Hellnar.

What are the stops on a Snaefellsnes day tour?

The core six: Ytri Tunga seal beach, Budir church, Arnarstapi, Londrangar, Djupalonssandur and Kirkjufell. Some add Berserkjahraun, Gerduberg, a farm lunch or a red church.

Minutes per stop as listed by each operator. "Not listed" means the tour passes by or skips it.

The coach and premium tours list an hour for the national park and glacier: that covers short stops inside the park such as the Saxholl crater, not a hike. Your Day Tours swaps Londrangar for Ingjaldsholskirkja, a red-roofed church near Hellissandur.

The longest seal stop of any tour: 40 minutes at Ytri Tunga, then 45 at Arnarstapi, hotel pickup included.

What can you do in 30 minutes at Djupalonssandur?

Walk down to the beach, try the lifting stones, see the Epine shipwreck and look along the shore to Dritvik. Thirty minutes covers it without rushing; 45 lets you sit for a while.

  • The path down runs between lava walls from the car park, short and rocky. Allow 5 minutes each way.
  • The lifting stones sit by the path: Fullsterkur 154 kg, Halfsterkur 100 kg, Halfdraettingur 54 kg and Amlodi 23 kg. Tradition says a man had to lift Halfdraettingur to hip height to earn a place on a fishing boat. Try Amlodi, "useless", and leave the big one alone.
  • The wreck: rusted iron from the British trawler Epine GY7, wrecked in 1948, lies on the pebbles. Don't move it.
  • The pebbles are protected; taking them is not allowed.
  • Toilets: two cubicles at the car park in summer, closed for winter from 13 October until spring. Off season, use the Malarrif visitor centre toilets, which stay open.

Stay well back from the waterline. The pebbles shelve steeply into the surf.

Is Djupalonssandur dangerous?

The beach is safe on dry ground and dangerous at the waterline. Sneaker waves run far up the pebbles without warning, and the current can pull a person out to sea.

Never turn your back on the sea, keep children by the hand and don't step onto wet pebbles for a photo. Swimming and wading are out. Guides repeat this at every stop, for good reason: the same Atlantic swell hits Reynisfjara on the south coast, where waves have killed visitors.

Wind is the other hazard. On stormy days guides shorten this stop or skip it, and that is the right call.

What can you do in 30 minutes at Arnarstapi?

See the Gatklettur arch, the basalt cliffs and the Bardur Snaefellsas statue, and walk a little of the cliff path. The 2.5 km walk to Hellnar needs more time than any day tour gives.

From the car park it is a five-minute walk to the statue of Bardur, the half-troll guardian of the peninsula, and another few minutes along the cliff to Gatklettur, the rock arch. In summer kittiwakes nest on the ledges. With 45 to 50 minutes, walk on towards the little harbour. A coach guest advised: "Do the 3 km hike to the Marina for sure."

Arnarstapi doubles as the lunch stop on several tours. Public toilets with five cubicles are open 24/7. If you plan to eat at Snjofell, order first and walk after, or you'll spend your stop in the queue.

How long do tours stop at Kirkjufell, and can you climb it?

Between 10 and 40 minutes, enough for the Kirkjufellsfoss viewpoint and photos. No tour climbs the mountain, and climbing is prohibited in winter.

The classic photo is from the falls across the road from the mountain, a few minutes from the car park. Coaches pay their own parking; if you drive, the Kirkjufellsfoss car park charges ISK 1,400 for a small car, every hour of the day, and the national park adds an ISK 1,100 service fee per car.

Kirkjufell is 463 m high, steep and slippery, with several fatal accidents. West Iceland says climbing is strictly prohibited in winter and advises a local guide. After three deaths in four years, the landowners closed it to all hikers from November 2022 to mid-June 2023 (Grapevine). Take the photo and save your legs for Arnarstapi.

Will you see seals at Ytri Tunga?

Often, but never guaranteed. Harbour and grey seals haul out on the rocks, most reliably in June and July around low tide.

Ytri Tunga is a golden-sand cove on the south coast, the first stop on most loops. Seals are present all year, in smaller numbers in winter and at high tide. The rocks are uneven and slippery in rain, and the seals keep their distance if people crowd them: stay quiet and don't climb out towards them.

Fifteen minutes on the coach is tight once you've walked down. Forty with Nicetravel is relaxed. On a good day it feels like a show: "The seals looked as if they were posing for the delighted tourists", a premium-tour guest wrote.

Is the Budir church worth a stop?

Yes, for 10 to 20 minutes: the black wooden church on a lava field is one of the most photographed buildings in Iceland, and the stop is short by design.

A church has stood at Budir since 1703. The present building dates from 1848, when Steinunn Sveinsdottir had it rebuilt; it was moved in one piece in 1984, re-consecrated in 1987, and belongs to the National Museum of Iceland. Walk round it, look back at the glacier, and you're done.

Londrangar gets the same quick treatment: two basalt sea stacks of 75 m and 61 m, seen from a viewpoint near Malarrif, 15 to 30 minutes depending on the tour.

Which tour gives you the most time at the stops?

Nicetravel gives the most at the core stops: 190 listed minutes across the six. The small-group adventure spreads 240 minutes evenly over eight stops.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you get at Djupalonssandur on a tour?

Between 20 and 45 minutes: 20 with Gateway, 30 on the coach and Nicetravel, 35 on the premium and Arctic tours, 45 with EastWest and Your Day Tours.

Can you lift the stones at Djupalonssandur?

Yes, anyone can try. The lightest, Amlodi, weighs 23 kg; the heaviest, Fullsterkur, 154 kg. Bend your knees.

Does any tour stop at Vatnshellir cave on a day trip?

No. None of the day tours include it. Only the 2-day northern lights tour lists it, as an optional extra at extra cost.

Is there time to walk from Arnarstapi to Hellnar?

Not on a day tour. The coastal path is about 2.5 km each way, so it needs a car or a two-day trip.
