Snaefellsnes tours from Reykjavik

One long day takes you round a peninsula of lava fields, black beaches, sea cliffs and a glacier on a volcano. The tours all drive the same loop. What changes is the bus, the lunch and the minutes you get at each stop.

Snaefellsnes sits north-west of Reykjavik, about 190 km by road to Arnarstapi on the south coast and roughly 180 km to Kirkjufell on the north side. Every tour on Viator does it as a day trip of 10 to 12 hours, and most list 11. About half of that is driving.

Below is every option we track, with the live from-prices checked in October 2026. The coach is the cheapest seat. A small group costs $8 to $21 more and usually brings hotel pickup. Two tours put a hot lunch on the table, one private van takes up to seven people, and two trips stretch it over two days.

The quick answer

The cheapest seat is the BusTravel Iceland coach at $143, from Bus Stop 12. Small-group minibuses cost $151 to $164 and most pick you up at your hotel. For a cooked lunch, EastWest's farm meal at Lysuholl ($226) and Gateway to Iceland's lunch at Arnarstapi ($234) are the two to pick. Our default pick for most people: the Nicetravel small group at $154, the longest stops at Ytri Tunga and Arnarstapi of any small group.

How much does a Snaefellsnes tour from Reykjavik cost?

How long is a Snaefellsnes day tour from Reykjavik?

Plan on 11 to 12 hours door to door. The listings say 10 to 12, and guests report that most days run to the long end.

The first sight comes two to three hours after pickup. Borgarnes, 74 km out, is the usual coffee and toilet break on the way, then the bus crosses onto the peninsula. One Gateway guest put the maths plainly: "The reason this tour takes 11-12 hours is the distance to the north-western peninsula around 2.5h drive." An EastWest guest wrote: "It was advertised as an 11-hour trip, and in the end was nearly 12 hours."

The itineraries add up to about 4 to 5 hours of driving. The rest is stops. In winter you leave and come back in the dark: Reykjavik gets 4 hours 7 minutes of daylight on 21 December, and the guide spends it at the big stops.

Which Snaefellsnes tour is best?

For most people a small group like the Nicetravel trip at $154. Pick the coach if price comes first, and the EastWest farm-lunch tour if you want a proper meal.

  • Lowest price: the classic coach at $143. Up to 65 people, and guests report a separate guide and driver on many days.
  • Best all-round: the Nicetravel small group at $154. Hotel pickup, 40 minutes with the seals at Ytri Tunga, 45 at Arnarstapi, 30 at Londrangar.
  • Lunch sorted: EastWest with a farm meal at $226. A 75-minute homemade buffet at Lysuholl, then 45 minutes at Djupalonssandur.
  • Kirkjufell in the morning light: the premium small group at $164 makes it the very first stop, before the coaches arrive.
  • Longest at Kirkjufell: Arctic Adventures lists 40 minutes.
  • Your own pace: the private van, $1,300 for up to seven.

Group size is the real fork. Small group or coach goes through it in detail.

Is a Snaefellsnes day trip from Reykjavik worth it?

Yes, if you don't mind a long day. You get a glacier volcano, lava fields, black beaches, sea arches, seals and Kirkjufell, with fewer crowds than the south coast.

Locals call it Iceland in miniature, and guests keep using the same phrase. One wrote: "Scenery-wise I do think this area is the best for a day trip, you get glacier and volcano and lava fields and beaches/ cliff views and waterfalls, feels like a miniature Iceland." Another: "Beautiful area and more quiet than south side."

Since 27 September 2025 the peninsula is Iceland's first UNESCO biosphere reserve, with the Snaefellsjokull National Park at its core. The catch is the clock. If you only have one free day and haven't done the Golden Circle, do that first, then come here on day two. Skip it if a 12-hour day on a bus sounds like a punishment: a 2-day tour halves the strain.

Is lunch included on Snaefellsnes tours?

Only on two: EastWest serves a homemade meal at Lysuholl farm and Gateway to Iceland a lunch at Arnarstapi. On every other day tour you buy or bring your own.

The coach has no lunch stop at all. Food comes from the shop at the morning toilet break or the cafe at Arnarstapi, where the itinerary names Snjofell. A Your Day Tours guest summed it up: "We had sufficient bathroom breaks, but you better bring your own lunch."

On the EastWest tour, guests rave about the farm. "My fav was the lunch!!! OMG, everything was homemade! It was a buffet style with chicken, lamb, and vegetarian options." Drinks cost extra. Our what to wear and bring guide has the snack list.

Where do Snaefellsnes tours pick you up in Reykjavik?

The coach meets at Bus Stop 12, Hofdatorg, with hotel pickup for an extra fee. Most small groups collect you from your hotel or a numbered bus stop near it.

Central Reykjavik runs on numbered pickup stops, because big buses can't reach every street. With BusTravel Iceland, a shuttle often collects guests and brings them to the tour bus, and guests report the swap can take half an hour or more before you leave town. Be at your stop 15 minutes early and keep your phone on.

Nicetravel and EastWest list hotel pickup and drop-off. The small-group adventure collects from designated central bus stops. Check the exact spot in your confirmation the evening before: operators do change them.

When is the best time of year for a Snaefellsnes tour?

June to August for long light, open roads and the best odds of seals. Winter tours run too, with about four hours of usable daylight and real wind.

In summer the light lasts almost all night, so nobody rushes. Seals at Ytri Tunga are easiest to see in June and July around low tide. September and October still give long enough days, more rain and the first snow on the passes.

From November to February the tour races the sun. A Nicetravel guest from December wrote: "Our driver and guide Addi had us on a strict schedule and tried his best to ensure we managed to see all the sights in daylight, since we only had about 4-5 hours of daylight in December." Storms can shorten stops or cancel the day, and then you get a refund. Check umferdin.is for road status the night before.

Can you see Snaefellsnes and Kirkjufell in one day?

Yes. Every day tour here stops at Kirkjufell, for 10 to 40 minutes depending on the operator, on the same loop as Djupalonssandur and Arnarstapi.

Kirkjufell, the 463 m "Church Mountain" by Grundarfjordur, is the photo everyone wants, with the Kirkjufellsfoss falls in front. Gateway gives it 10 minutes plus 20 at the falls, the premium tour 20, most others 25 to 30 and Arctic Adventures 40. No tour climbs it.

The minute-by-minute picture for every stop is in the day tour stops guide.
