Arctic Adventures · Reykjavik

The longest stop at Kirkjufell

Iceland's biggest tour company runs a 19-seat minibus to the peninsula with WiFi on board and a free hand for the guide on two hours of the route. Pick it if Kirkjufell is the photo you came for: 40 minutes there is the longest of any day tour.

Snaefellsnes & Kirkjufell Minibus

About this experience

Arctic Adventures is one of the largest activity operators in Iceland, and this tour is its small-group take on the peninsula. Pickup is from central Reykjavik pickup points; the minibus has WiFi and an English-speaking licensed guide. The fixed stops are Kirkjufell for 40 minutes, Djupalonssandur 35, Budir church 15 and Arnarstapi 45.

The rest is open: the listing blocks out two hours for "Snaefellsnes" without naming stops. Guests describe the guide using it for the seal beach, a waterfall, lava fields, a crater and small churches. That flexibility works well with a good guide and in bad weather, when the guide can pick sheltered stops.

Know two things before you book. The review count is small (77, with few recent written reviews), so it's less proven than two comparable trips: Nicetravel, EastWest. And meals are excluded; one guest's guide chose a good café for lunch, but plan on bringing food. One 2023 guest had the tour cancelled 48 hours ahead with little explanation, so leave slack in your trip if this day matters.

What guests say

★★★★★

Guide (Domenica's driving and patter were excellent). Was lucky enough to have stunning weather. [...] Winter so not so much wildlife around but fulmars were good and probable arctic fox tracks in one area. Am an Iceland Guide myself so was hoping for something good and have 'stolen' some ideas! :)

There was a wind warning the day we went on our tour, but such is Iceland! Our guide, Carlos, was amazingly upbeat and positive in the face of adversity when we had a few things go wrong.

The sites selected for us to visit were amazing. Our driver, Dominica, selected a special spot for lunch - Matalist- it was amazing food.

Tips before you book

  • Pack food anyway. Meals are excluded, and the lunch stop depends on the guide.
  • Book it early in your trip. If the operator cancels for weather or numbers, you'll still have days to rebook.
  • Bring a warm layer for the bus: a guest suggested buses carry blankets for emergencies, which tells you how cold a breakdown can be.
  • At Kirkjufell, use the 40 minutes to walk the path around Kirkjufellsfoss. Most groups only manage the viewpoint.
