Day one copies Nicetravel's small-group day trip: Borgarnes, 40 minutes at Ytri Tunga, Budir church, 45 at Arnarstapi, 30 each at Londrangar, Djupalonssandur and Kirkjufell. The difference is the evening. Instead of 2.5 hours back to Reykjavik, the minibus stops in Borgarnes, where you sleep in a double or twin room. A guest liked the town's choice of places for dinner.
Day two heads up Borgarfjordur. Hraunfossar, where water seeps out of a lava field into the river, gets 40 minutes, with 20 at Barnafoss next door. Then the highlight: 90 minutes in Vidgelmir, a 1,585 m lava tube formed about 1,100 years ago, with walkways and lighting and the admission fee included. The return passes Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring (about 180 litres a second at 97°C), and a 45-minute visit to the Sturlureykir horse farm.
Be honest about the night: Borgarnes is only about 74 km from Reykjavik, and one guest felt two separate day trips would have done the same job. The value is in the pace and the cave. Luggage is limited to a small bag, food other than breakfast is on you, and the minimum age is 5.
