Booking choice: The 2-day northern lights tour, from $562 per person. Check dates Tour details
Every winter people book a Snaefellsnes day tour hoping to see the northern lights on the way. The tour leaves in the morning and is back in Reykjavik in the evening, and nothing on its itinerary involves the night sky. If you want the aurora on the peninsula, you need to be there after dark, which means a night out of the city.
Below: when the season runs in 2026-27, what the sun is doing, how to read the Icelandic Met Office forecast, and what the one aurora tour in our list really promises.
The quick answer
The aurora season in Iceland runs from about late September to early April, on dark and clear nights. The sun passed its solar maximum period, announced by NASA and NOAA in October 2024, and activity stays high in the declining years. Clouds decide more than the sun: check the vedur.is cloud and aurora forecast. Day tours return before the sky gets going; the 2-day tour with a night in Borgarfjordur hunts the lights if conditions are right. Nobody can guarantee them.
When is northern lights season on Snaefellsnes in 2026-27?
From about late September to early April. You need full darkness and a clear sky; the months around the equinoxes are often the most active.
The aurora is there all year. In summer Iceland simply never gets dark enough to see it. From late September the nights are long enough, and by December you have up to 20 hours without daylight. Long nights are not the same as good nights, though. Midwinter brings more storms and more cloud. September, October, February and March often give the best mix of darkness, calmer weather and geomagnetic activity, which tends to pick up around the equinoxes.
Moonlight matters less than people think, but a full moon does wash out weak displays. If you can choose, plan your night out of Reykjavik for the week around the new moon; timeanddate's moon phase calendar lists the dates.
| Month | Hours without daylight | Aurora outlook |
|---|---|---|
| September | About 10 h, rising | Season opens late in the month; mild nights |
| October | 12 h 40 min rising to 16 h | Good activity, changeable weather |
| November | 16 h rising to 19 h | Long nights, more cloud |
| December | 19 h to 20 h | Most darkness, most storms |
| January | 19 h 40 min falling to 17 h | Cold, clear spells between lows |
| February | 17 h falling to 14 h | Strong pick: darkness plus calmer spells |
| March | 14 h falling to 10 h 30 min | Equinox activity, season ends early April |
Is the solar maximum over, and will 2026-27 still be a good aurora winter?
The peak has passed, but the sun is still active. Strong storms often come in the declining years of a cycle, so 2026-27 is a good winter to try.
In October 2024 NASA and NOAA announced that the sun had reached its solar maximum period. NOAA's solar cycle progression charts show the smoothed peak around late 2024 and a slow decline since. Slow is the key word: the sunspot numbers in 2026 are still far above a quiet-sun year.
Big aurora nights come from coronal mass ejections and fast solar wind, and those keep happening on the way down. The Halloween storms of 2003, some of the strongest of the space age, hit more than three years after that cycle's peak. In Iceland the aurora oval sits overhead, so even a modest night shows something if the sky is clear. The real limit is the weather, not the sun.

How do you read the vedur.is aurora and cloud forecast?
Look at the cloud map first, then the activity number. White on the map means clear sky; the 0 to 9 scale is the expected activity at midnight.
The Icelandic Met Office runs the aurora forecast used by every guide in the country. The map shows cloud cover, where green is cloudy and white is clear; the box in the corner gives auroral activity on a scale of 0 to 9. The Met Office's own instructions say a 2 can be beautiful and a 3 can be dazzling, so do not wait for a 7.
Our rule: a clear patch over Snaefellsnes with activity 2 beats a cloudy sky with 5. You can switch between low, middle and high cloud layers; thin high cloud often lets a strong display through. Check it in the afternoon and again around 21:00. The best hours are usually between 22:00 and 02:00, though a good night can start right after dark.
Can you see the northern lights on a Snaefellsnes day tour?
Not as part of the tour. Day tours run on daylight and are back in Reykjavik in the evening; any aurora from the bus window on the way home is luck.
All the day tours on this site last 10 to 12 hours and are built around the midday light at the stops. From November to February the drive home is dark, and on a clear, active night you may catch a glow through the window. No itinerary has a stop for it. One farm-lunch guest in January 2026 said their guide "made us PhDs on the Northern Lights on the ride home". That is the realistic version: stories, not a sighting.
Booking an evening northern lights tour from Reykjavik on the same day is a bad idea. You get back from the peninsula tired, and those tours often run until 1 or 2 in the morning. Do the two on different days.
Two days, a hotel night out of the city and a guide who goes looking when the forecast looks good.
Check dates for the 2-day northern lights tourWhich Snaefellsnes tour includes a northern lights hunt?
The 2-day Snaefellsnes and Borgarfjordur tour, with a hotel night and a hunt "if conditions are right". The listing says plainly that the lights cannot be confirmed.
The 2-day northern lights tour is a small-group minibus trip, max 18, from $562. Day one is the peninsula with long stops: about two hours each around Arnarstapi and Djupalonssandur, plus Kirkjufell. The Vatnshellir lava cave is an optional extra at its own price. You sleep in a hotel with breakfast, and if the forecast looks promising the guide takes the group out after dark. Day two covers Borgarfjordur: Deildartunguhver, Hraunfossar, a horse farm, Gerduberg and Reykholt.
Read the fine print the way it is written: "We can therefore never confirm that you will be able to see them during your tour." Minimum age is 8, and solo travellers share a room with someone of the same gender unless they book the single-room option. The other two-day option, Nicetravel's lava cave tour, has no aurora hunt on the listing, but you still spend the night in Borgarnes, an hour and a bit from Reykjavik's lights. Step outside after dinner and look north.

Explore the 2-day northern lights tour Tour detailsWhat do you need for a northern lights night on Snaefellsnes?
Warm boots, a down layer, gloves you can use a phone in, and a phone or camera that can take a few seconds of exposure. Patience helps more than anything.
Standing still at minus 5 in a breeze is colder than walking at the same temperature. Wear everything you brought for the day and add one more layer. A phone with a night mode on a small tripod or a rock catches far more colour than your eyes do; set a 3 to 10 second exposure if your camera allows it, and turn the screen brightness down.
On the two-day tour the guide picks the spot. If you are driving yourself, pull fully off the road into a proper parking area, never on the verge of Route 54, and check umferdin.is before you set off after dark. More on clothing in our what-to-wear guide, and the daytime side of winter is in Snaefellsnes in winter.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see the northern lights on Snaefellsnes?
Yes, on dark and clear nights from about late September to early April. The peninsula has very little light pollution, but cloud often hides the sky. Nothing is guaranteed.
Is 2026-27 still a good year for the northern lights?
Yes. NASA and NOAA announced the solar maximum period in October 2024, and the sun stays active for years after the peak. Clear skies matter more than the exact year.
Do Snaefellsnes day tours include the northern lights?
No. Day tours run in daylight and return to Reykjavik in the evening. Only the 2-day tour with a hotel night includes a hunt, and only if conditions are right.
What aurora forecast number do I need in Iceland?
On the vedur.is 0 to 9 scale, a 2 or 3 is often enough under a clear sky. Check the cloud map first.
